The Teton Range Black Agate
This agate is a masterpiece, capturing the essence of the Teton Mountain Range. It's a personal connection, reminiscent of my childhood views from my mom's window. I found it during a challenging trip to Hell's Hole, an experience I documented in a series for EastIdahoNews.com. Its value to me is immeasurable, and I have no intention of selling it.
The Brother of Jared Rock
My second favorite is a white and clear agate with a unique image. To me, it tells a story from scripture, making it a precious find.
Favorite Types of Rocks
Moss Agates
Moss agates are my top choice, with their diverse colors and variations found in central Idaho. The "Old Carey Moss" is a rare find, and my collection boasts an impressive range of shades, including rare reds, blacks, and blues.
Jasper and Agate Combinations
The interplay of jasper and agate creates stunning designs. My favorite combination is light blue and white with red and green accents, forming agate "flowers."
Agate Nodules
Small agate nodules are common but offer a surprise. When tumbled and polished, the crushed quartz crystals within create a captivating sparkle.
While these are my favorites, I'm always drawn to beautiful black agates, wonderstones, and crystals. Fossils and opals are less appealing to me due to their complexity for my skill level.
Becoming a Rock Hound
For those interested in rock collecting, joining a rock club is invaluable. I joined the Idaho Falls Gem and Mineral Society 14 years ago, and it's been a gateway to not only finding great rocks but also making friends and expanding my knowledge and territory. It's a community that enriches the rock-hunting experience.
Personally, I think the appeal of rock collecting goes beyond the rocks themselves. It's about the stories they tell, the connections they inspire, and the community they build. From my perspective, each rock is a piece of art, a window to a different world, and a reminder of the beauty in nature's creations.
